Milk thistle is an herbal remedy derived from the milk thistle plant, also known as Silybum marianum. The active ingredients in milk thistle are a group of plant compounds collectively known as silymarin. Silymarin is believed to have antioxidant properties. Native to Europe and introduced into North America by early colonists, Milk thistle is found throughout the eastern United States, California, South America, Africa, Australia, and Asia. Historically, people have used milk thistle for liver disorders and gallbladder problems. Milk thistle is promoted as a dietary supplement for hepatitis, cirrhosis, jaundice, diabetes, indigestion, and other conditions, and may cause an allergic reaction in people who are allergic to the Asteraceae/Compositae family of plants.
